From Philipstoren to MULTI
In 2017, the conversion project of the former Philipstoren into MULTI received the BE.EXEMPLARY award. This prize from the Brussels Region gives a subsidy to projects that contribute to sustainable architecture. It is from this perspective that this book has been compiled.
The book is a form of reporting and reflection on the creation of MULTI. It brings together design drawings, fragments of the BIM model, sketches, scale models, annotated production drawings on the one hand, and a photographic report of the construction process on the other. As a form of documentation of a long and complex process involving many different people with widely varying areas of expertise, it is by definition incomplete.
The order of the documents in the book is not chronological, but rather relational.
Reflections
In order to provide more background to the main lines of the research – public debate, public interior, young post-war heritage, private development with public ambitions, integrated practice and critical circularity – a series of articles have been woven into the book. The texts, insights and reflections are a crucial part and place designing, elaboration, craftsmanship and working with MULTI in a broader debate.
These contributions are from: Kristiaan Borret (master architect maitre architecte of the Brussels-Capital Region), Asli Çicek (architect), Sven Sterken (KU Leuven), Valérie Vermandel (Whitewood), Gwen Vreven (Immobel Group), Frederik Jacobs (CONIX RDBM Architects ) & Tomas Ooms (Studio Garden and World) and Lionel Billiet & Arne Vande Capelle (ROTOR). The photos are by Jasper van der Linden.
